Located in San Marcos, Texas, Taylor Louis & The Legacy is a high energy hip-hop/RnB/Jazz that puts a modern and hip twist to their craft. The Band includes Taylor Louis on the keys and lead vocals, Whitney Williams on bass guitar and backup vocals, and Marcus Alexander on the drums. The band met as a result of the lead song-writer, Taylor Louis, was looking for a band to perform his songs that he had written. After numerous jam sessions, it was clear that the end result was a faucet for creativity that all members contributed to. All the members bring their own sides to the plate; Marcus Alexander brought a very sampled Hiphop feel, Whitney Williams provided a more gospel feel to things, while Taylor Louis brought a more soulful and jazz influenced sound. The end result was a three course meal that was completely original and a sound that was completely all of their own. The band currently gigs in San Marcos, Houston, and Austin.

After quitting his full-time job to pursue his passion, Seattle-raised singer, songwriter, guitarist and author Alex Rasmussen took to the streets and venues of the Pacific Northwest to share his beautiful noise–a unique blend of folk, rock and reggae fueled by the adventures and heartaches of a nomadic spirit. Between solo gigs and shows with his band “A Lovely Ruckus”, Alex performed over 100 times in 2016 . And with 3 tours and over 100 shows already under his belt for 2017, his momentum continues to grow as he tirelessly refines his craft.

From garage bands of the 60s, to the back to the land movement of the 70s, exodus from Dallas – organic gardening, solar energy experiments, hippy community, midwifery, babies. As Bob carried his guitar into the woods, reggae emerged as the conscious musical expression for the people of the world. As the new millennium unfolded, an eclectic reality blossomed into vast musical genres & fusions. And music, still as much as ever, is the weapon of choice, continuing to express universal truths & sounding the call for conscious change. And the back beat of reggae still courses through the vanes of Bob’s music.

September’s exhibit at AquaBrew features work by Stevie Black, Ronnie Borden, Ashee Brunson, Tanner Casey, Deb Gibson, Marieta Hutchison, John Roof, Judy Row, Patrick Steger and Zac Witte. Curated by Gigi Mederos.
The exhibition coincides with September’s Mermaid Festival and plays on the theme of “Blue and Green” with a mix of abstract and representational works including photography, painting, glass and fiber art.
Reception for the artists will be on Tuesday September 19th from 6-8 pm. The exhibit will be on view during normal business hours
and is free to the public.
The September 21 Third Thursday Walkabout will feature a Pop-Up event by Ronnie Borden from 6-9 pm.
The exhibition is now open and runs through October 1st, 2017.
The inspiration for the exhibit: The “Blue and Green” theme was chosen to work in concert with more literal approaches to mermaid-themes work and exhibitions that will be taking place around San Marcos during the town-wide Mermaid Festival. Mederos thought there could be artists whose work is better suited to the margins of the conversation; having more to do with the natural environment or conceptual approaches. The selections grouped here are an eclectic mix including a monumental, expressionistic figure painting, two scenes with trees, and a lush abstract; beautiful utilitarian glass works, two fiber-art pieces, and all counterpointed with photographic works exploring the landscape in different forms and formulas; some act as a window we see through, while others act as a mirror.
Come out Sunday for some good old fashion Jazz Brunch with Jamal Edwards and his Trio! Good eats and drinks guaranteed!
This musical journey began in Austin, Texas. Immersed in the tradition of the Texas roadhouse I gravitated towards that style of music. The blend of blues/country/rock and funk has always been a part of me. Spending years as a side man in San Antonio, Austin and Corpus Christi I have finally ventured out on my own to stake my claim. With a new outlook on life I will continue this journey on the music highway. Love and peace-Live in peace…Tony Rodriguez
The Mermaid Aqua Faire is made possible in part by Tanger Outlets, San Marcos, Chuck Nash Auto Group and the City of San Marcos.Highlighting our unique river and artistic culture, the Downtown Mermaid Promenade is created to be a celebration of San Marcos’ vibrant artistic and river community. With nearly 100 entries last year and on record for the largest turnout for a parade in San Marcos, the downtown parade is back by popular demand! Austin Samba School and Las Monas Performance Group lead the parade bringing their brand of “radical creativity, fantasy, and imagination” to the streets with a sizzling combination of rhythm, dance, movement, color, joy and …giant mermaid puppets! The parade will feature floats, marchers, dancers, and music! This second annual ‘Texas original’ will highlight selected honorees representing the arts, river guardianship, local entrepreneurship and heritage of San Marcos. Fresh water mermaids are the primary theme for this family fun event. This all-inclusive city parade celebrates our history of the Aquamaids of Aquarena Springs and immortalizes the mermaid as guardians of the San Marcos River. The parade line-up starts at the corner of CM Allen and Cheatham Street and offers plenty of viewing options along the route. The fun continues at the Mermaid Aqua Faire immediately following the parade at the San Marcos Main Park Plaza from 10:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. All within walking distance from downtown, the family can enjoy this FREE community festival of art, live music, food, and fun!
Some of the Parade highlights include the Mermaid SPLASH Royal Court to include our King of SPLASH, Mermaid Queen and Royal Court, Parade Grand Marshal and Honorees.

The Mermaid Society is pleased to recognize Linda Kelsey-Jones as an Arts Honoree for her contributions to the vitality of the arts in San Marcos. For many years, it was almost certain that any event in the community in which art had a part – exhibits, art classes, displays – that Linda Kelsey-Jones was involved in some capacity. Even now, with an explosion in the visual arts in San Marcos, she remains involved in numerous projects and activities. A sampling of the many roles she has filled in San Marcos include:
• Founder and curator of the Walkers’ Gallery at the San Marcos Activity Center, a role she has held since it opened 20 years ago.
• Lecturer in the School of Art and Design at Texas State University, where she helps train future art educators.
• Founder of Art Space, which offers art classes for youth after-school and during the summer, which art education majors help teach. Populations include adjudicated youth from the local shelter, and children from the Boys and Girls Club. Art Space is currently housed at Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos.
• Founder of the San Marcos Area Arts Council, whose mission is to encourage, support and promote the arts, specifically through programs such as Arts in Public Places, Arts in the Community, and Arts in Education.
• Founder of Youth Art Month in San Marcos.
• Member of the Board of Directors for the Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos, and curator of art exhibits at the facility.
• Member of the Board of Directors for the Calaboose African-American History Museum, and curator of art exhibits at the museum.
• Taught Kids Kollege, a summer art camp, for many years. This included the production of more than 200 4’x4’ panels painted by local children, which were hung on a long fence at a construction site at Texas State University for more than a year.
• Original organizer of the LBJ/MLK Crossroads Memorial beginning in 2002 and culminating in the dedication of the memorial in 2014.
• Original curator of the Gallery of the Common Experience at Texas State University. In that capacity, she spearheaded major efforts to bring to campus and the community numerous national and international exhibits.
• Helped in the establishment of the first Texas State University Eddie Durham Festival and served as lead organizer for three community-based Eddie Durham Festivals, sponsored by the Calaboose.
• Co-chaired Youth Festival with the Greater San Marcos Youth Council. With Texas State students and area artist facilitators, organized at least two dozen experiences in the visual, musical and performing arts for young people.
While best known for her community involvement in the arts, Ms. Kelsey-Jones is also an outstanding artist in her own right – a photographer, painter, photo-collage artist, and much, much more. The Mermaid Society is pleased to honor Linda Kelsey-Jones for her years of creativity, dedication, and service to the community.

After high school, David pursued a degree in music and started a new band, The Hecklers with Eric Nuncio and Cody Boyer. The band played in Texas for a few years, releasing two albums, and in 2015 decided to make the move to Nashville to find a better scene for the band. The Hecklers played there unsuccessfully for nine months and added another member. David began to lose creative control and moved home to start a project he could direct. He reached out to friends he had musical experience with and made it clear this would be his project. The others agreed. For the most part.
